A DEVIL’S TALE

A devil’s tale

THE LITTLE DEVILS ARE SIBLINGS, AND OUT OF CURIOSITY THEY GET INTO VARIOUS SITUATIONS THROUGHOUT THE STORY. THEY BECOME MORE AND MORE INCLINED TO DECIDE HOW AND WHAT TO GET INVOLVED IN. THE LITTLE DEVILS ENCOUNTER VARIOUS FANTASTIC CREATURES ALONG THE WAY, PLAYED BY THE PERFORMERS ON THE GROUND AND IN THE AIR BY CHANGING COSTUMES AND CHARACTERS.

„Theatre is magic! (...) If anything is truly close to magic, it can only be something like this. A Devil's Tale, the performance by Ágnes Simor's circus and dance troupe, is really strong in creating this magic, to be precise in the artistic circus acts, the dance acrobatics, and the inventive visuals. The company is well aware of this, and is not afraid to use its power: they are, by no means, afraid of a possible bad reaction from the children's audience, or to put it better, they do not aim to please the children, but they know that attention, even at a young age, can be sustained not only with the simplest methods - for example, with clear wording, with linear and continuous storytelling – because it is only quality that matters. Thus, the tale of the three well-intentioned, albeit comical devils who rob the main devil, is bravely interrupted again and again with longer physical theater scenes without content, that can be translated into text and words. And these are the best moments of A Devil's Tale, the part when the devils find those, who were robbed by the other devil and return the stolen goods. Director, Ágnes Simor consistently operates two worlds on the stage: the funny, down-to-earth scenes of the devils, and the airy apparitions of various figures of fairy tales and myths, who flaunt physical laws and guide us into other spheres: fairies dancing with aerial silk, weaving ribbons as they bend, suspended from the dome of the sky, almost merging with each other in the air as they share a swing, figures climbing on each other's backs, gracefully standing on their heads and turning over as they hold onto each other, and forces that balance, ignite and extinguish fire. And the audience follows in breathless silence with rapt attention as the troupe paints the characters, magical places or new dimensions without words, using only images, the atmosphere emanating from them, and feelings caught out of thin air. Meanwhile, János Vázsonyi, and often the actors themselves, are constantly accompanying the action with music, or rather add to it, making what we see a whole, sometimes using strange instruments, and sometimes just strange musical ideas.”
